Theft is a Social Disease……
…and I caught it from Mr Lady. She took the meme without being asked, and I like it, so I am, too. If you don’t like it, you must blame her for corrupting me, naturally. Anyway, enough nattering! Here we……

Monday, 7 April, 2008 at 11:54Cider House changed my life. I read it in 7th grade. Up till that point, I had been reading Dean Koontz or Sweet Valley High, or some shit like that. I read Cider on the floor of my mom’s closet on a rainy day. I wept for the mere fact that a book could contain so much humanity. Years later I read Owen Meany, and again I was brought back to that moment of recognition that great literature can invade the soul and speak directly to the secret places in our heart.
Great Post.

Monday, 7 April, 2008 at 11:58Wait, I just realized that you mentioned Jose Saramago. Do you know he is my very favorite author. I adore him. Seriously. I have read everything he has written. I have never met another person who read and loved his books. Have you read The Cave? Seriously, if you haven’t, I’ll send it to you. Have you read Oranges are not the only fruit, but Jeannet Winterson? You would eat that book up with a spoon. I’m such a book nerd. I could go on and on. I won’t. I’ll back away from your blog now.
But, I may have to stalk you via e-mail now to talk books. K?

Monday, 7 April, 2008 at 12:20We named my youngest son after Owen Meany; no kidding. His dad balked at first, but gave in becaue I was so adamant about it. Then he read the book and was like, huh? But yeah, both of his books you mentioned are incredible. John Irving is either hit and miss, though; I own and have read all but two, but some of them I would never read again. And hey, American Psycho? You will love it; at least I did, anyway!

Monday, 7 April, 2008 at 13:22If all my google reader bloggers would stop their damn posting (you included) I might have time to pick up a book. These sound interesting. I am a Christian, but find it fun to read things like “The Red Tent” and the “Gospel According to Jesus Christ” sounds intriguing because it wouldn’t change my mind, but give me something to think about.
Thanks for the ideas. Now to talk all the blogs I read into stopping long enough for me to read a book…

Monday, 7 April, 2008 at 14:28oh, this will definitely make a fun post.
i read h2g2 when i was around 9…maybe we were reading it at the same time. i suggest, instead of american psycho, checking out Glamorama first. Infinitely more disturbing, in a realistic way. then also read american psycho. once you read one, you’ll be looking for more.

Monday, 7 April, 2008 at 14:45Ahh…American Psycho. The only book that made me cry and vomit at the same time. I never EVER dreamed that black print on a white page could freak me out that much…
I’m going to have to vote for Franny and Zoe–JD Salinger. Changed my life. Nuff said :)
As for war and peace…I say leave it on the shelf. It sort of bored me.

Monday, 7 April, 2008 at 15:24I obviously don’t read enough because I only recognized a few books on this list and have only read the Galaxy book.
My hubby has an amazing collection of books, but very few interest me enough to start them. One sitting collecting dust that I keep saying I’m going to read is Lolita.
I find it harder to make time to read. It cuts into my lounging time on the couch as that’s when I have the majority of my free time.
Mr. Lady, How many books do you read on an average month? Asking cause Rude Cactus reads all the time.

Monday, 7 April, 2008 at 15:35Ooh, Saramago… I’ll have to pick that one up. I really enjoyed Blindness a while back.
Given your love of blasphemy, you’ll probably enjoy this.
And even though you didn’t tag me, I just might play along. Even without feelin’ the love.

Monday, 7 April, 2008 at 18:12Thank you for tagging me on this one! I see lots of memes out there that I breathe a sigh of relief over, since I have no idea what I’d write (yes, of course, I would come up with something…) — but this? THIS I can do. Although it will be hard to choose, it will be really fun to think about.
Look for it later this week.

Monday, 7 April, 2008 at 20:45Two Irving books I haven’t read. Owen I’ve meant to read for a long time. Did you read Son of the Circus? Excellent. I love love LOVE Hitchhikers. Those books are so wonderful and I love the comic style. Ever read any Terry Pratchett Discworld books? Wonderful fantasy and very tongue in cheek.

Have to check out your first book too-bet I’d love it.
