Auld Lang Syne
I grew up in a house full of music, and most of my memories of childhood have a soundtrack. A strange soundtrack. Maybe we'll talk about that someday.
Today, we're going to talk about one guy. That one guy shaped a whole lot of my views on music. His voice gets me right *here* no matter how old I get or how outdated he gets. That guy died on Sunday.
Longer was one of the first songs I learned to play on the piano. The Leader of the Band has been and always will be the song I listen to when I just really need my dad. Same Old Lang Syne is my very favorite of his songs, and only for its' simplicity and realness. That shit could happen to anyone. Someone put it on a mixtape for me once, and now that song forever has a home in my heart, too.
Yes, I am completely aware of the fact that I am way too young to love Dan Fogelberg, but I love Dan Fogelberg. It's one of those things I will never fess up to loving in public, but I really, really do when I'm all by myself.
There's no point to this, really. He died, and I find myself a little sad about that.

You are not too young to love Dan. Because I love Dan. I am only slightly embarrassed to admit that Leader of the Band is one of my favorite songs. And I absolutely love Same Old Lang Syne. They are both brilliant songs even if they came out of the same 80's light rock movement that spawned Christopher Cross and really lame Toto songs.
You are not alone.
i didn't know he died! i'm so sad! i loved dan fogelberg, too!
The singer that always gets me *here* is Pavarotti. When he died my husband called and asked if I was ok because he knew I'd be sitting here crying. And I was. It's silly in a way but I can't help it. When someone touches you like he did me, and Dan Fogelberg did you, you feel connected on some level.
Hey, I dig some Dan Fogelberg too. Sad that he died.
Next time you visit, I shall serenade you with my guitar playing "Leader of the Band" (it's the only one I know) and then follow it up with my own composition (with help from WWR'er Tom) "Puerto Rican Devil Rooster."
Or maybe "The Day I Saw Laetitia Casta Walking Down the Street Naked in Macon, GA."
I think Dan would approve.
