Rate the Hate in a can

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's week three with no recipe. I just haven't been in the cooking sort of mood, you know? It never fails to amaze me how long kids will go on Honeycomb and tacos. They don't smell great, but my big pots and pans have enjoyed their little siesta.

Anywho, I thought I could at least talk about food today, and so, without further ado, I offer you the list of foods I prefer, nigh, demand, from a can.

  • Refried beans. I used to work at this little diner in East Denver, and they made every-stinking-thing from scratch. Including their refried beans. They were really good, don't get me wrong, but you set me up with a can of Old ElPaso beans and a block of cheese, and I'm all good for a while. At some point, I may require a potty, but otherwise, I'm good.

  • Beets. I have a beet problem. I love them and crave them like a pregnant chick craves broccoli. What? Didn't you crave broccoli? Moving on...I always just get the canned beets at the grocery, but I decided to live on the edge a little, splurge on myself, and get the fancy ones in a jar. Um? Gross. My BFF Molly tells me that the restaurant my buddy Ryan just opened up makes a kick-ass beet salad, but until I try it, I'm sticking with the cheap ass canned ones.

  • Cranberry Sauce. I can whip up a cranberry chutney that will bring you to your knees. I make my own cranberry sauce all the time, because it's easy and good and brainless. But when it's just me, when I'm all alone and no one's looking, man oh lordy do I love nothing better than a big ol' spoon and a cheap can of cranberry sauce.

  • Tuna. Any foodie worth their salt has made, eaten or in some way danced around the subject of seared Ahi. It's all the rage with the kids these days. I would rather (insert colorful and perhaps biological comparison here) than let seared Ahi tuna anywhere near my body, let alone my face. A can of tuna + a package of crackers = a happy Mr Lady.

  • Pumpkin. My BFF Molly just died. Molly is a pumpkin baker. I am just a pumpkin eater. Honestly, pumpkins gross me the hell out. Chock it off to never having carved a pumpkin until I was, like, 27 or something. Anyway, I love pumpkiny food, and bake with pumpkin a LOT, but will only use the plain, unspiced variety of pumpkin goo.

I imagine this list will grow as the day goes on, but for now, that's really all I can think of. The question is, what are you cheap and lazy about?

When I was pregnant, I craved two things:

1. paper-thin sliced swiss cheese, with big holes... and dammit, if it wasn't paper thin then I might kick your ass.

2. gum balls, red ones.

Who has issues now?

when I was pregnant it was arby's jalapeno poppers ... which evolved into boxed jp's from whatever store I could find them - and they didn't need to go into the oven, the microwave was just fine by me.

Oh, too funny! I just blogged about the spaghetti sauce I nearly poisoned my family with the other night. I'm all about the can baby.

Beets? Gag.

When I was pregnant it was the BK chicken fries. Now, I can't even hear the words 'chicken' and 'fries' in the same sentence. EVER.

can tuna - what you said
imitation crab meat flakes - an entire pkg eaten with my fingers (brb, gotta add that to the grocery list)
Ragu Traditional (none of those fancy flavors, just plain 'ol)
French's yellow
marichino cherries - straight out of the little jar
pistachio pudding - made with slightly less milk than recommended
Vlasco Baby Dills - the pickles are good and I can eat an entire jar at once, but the real delicacy is drinking the juice mmmm

The list is longer but I'll stop grossing you out now.

Does it only have to be when you're pregnant? I didn't think that was the original question, but that seems to be the direction of the comments.

Because if the topic is pregnancy cravings, I fear I have little to say on that.

My lazy/cheap/from a can choices are:
- Korean ramen. Take noodles, deep fry them, add in spicy powder with all sorts of freeze dried vegetables and mushrooms. Can you/are you able to do that? I didn't think so. Open up that packet, and 3 minutes later you have unhealthy Asian yumminess.
- Campbell's Chunky Clam Chowder. Is there anything better? I don't think so. Actually, it's a little-known made-up fact that in the Greek myths, when they talk about the Gods on Olympus eating ambrosia, they were actually shoveling in the Campbell's Chunky Clam Chowder. Truth, I swear.
- Ranch-flavor Dorito's. Yet another food Mankind Cannot Make. I can eat a whole bag in one sitting. I'll regret it later, but it's like crack cocaine while my mouth is full.

Pregnancy cravings... Don't get in the way of a pregnant me and cheese enchiladas. I seriously tried ever Mexican restaurant in town to find the best cheese enchiladas and ya know what? Turns out they were right down the block, great since I didn't have a mister me to run out and bring me my desires, I had to haul my ass out in the rain. Oh and coffee, I craved coffee but restrained myself, I only had a couple of cups a week.

Definitely pumpkin from a can but that is about it. I cook all of my own beans and refry them myself. Oh, as a snack for the toddler(she's 15 months now) I use frozen peas and corn and cut carrots, she loves it and it keeps her happy while I whip up something else. I make almost all of my own baby food too but that's because the little shit has food allergies and I have to be really careful what I feed her or else she gets all red, like a strawberry.

Have I missed something? Are you pregnant?

I couldn't cook during my first trimester and my kids lived off of canned foods.

Are you? :)

I try really hard to not comment in my own comments section, but I just wanted to make this crystal clear...

I AM NOT PREGNANT. I WILL NOT BE PREGNANT AGAIN.

Say it with me. Not Pregnant.

during months 4-9 of pregnancy: mc donalds BIG EXTRAS. jalapenos smokies with a s***load of mustard from the 'street meat' vendors at the beach. cheap microwavable chicken chimichagas from 7-11, with salsa and sour cream. if you got between me and a steak, you were dead meat and i'd probably eat you. this from someone who was a vegetarian prior to morning sickness.

now: extra creamy vanilla yogurt, whipped black pepper cream cheese, cinnamon swirl life cereal, doritos sweet chili heat and those kim chi flavoured ramen noodles.

Let's see 4 kids, we are all about the quick and easy here!!
I do boxed mashed potatoes, I admit it, but I always add in sour cream, they taste so much better.
I get the Tyson diced chicken strips near the sandwich meat for whenever I am making a casserole that calls for cut up chicken.
And when all else fails, we live on Bagel Bites!

LMAO! Not pregnant!

The one thing I never ever go cheap on is Cream of Mushroom, for cooking. The generic brand is never as good.

I love talking about cooking, this is new for me.

You are kind of breaking my heart a bit with the pumpkin.

But also, I get using the canned pumpkin, I am just that much of a foodie that I can't go back to canned pumpkin. It's an economy of time thing. Beets are exactly the same. These foods are the biggest pain in the ass, when you get right down to it. What other foods do you have to cook, peel and then cook again? Pain in the ass. Almost fava bean pain in the ass, but not quite.

But, I must say, you are getting plenty of fiber from your canned food diet. Mr. Hanky would be proud.

I hate a lot of suckers when I was pregnant since I couldn't smoke. That was about the only thing I craved. Seriously. Cigarettes and wine. And I was a good pregnant lady and never had either.

I'm with you on the beets though. I am perfectly happy to eat a can of canned beets. And the cranberry sauce, too. AND, the pudding that comes in a can. Yum.

Interesting list. Hate everything on it, but the pumpkin. I'm one fussy chick about certain foods.

I honestly DO NOT REMEMBER what I craved when I was pregnant. I'm sure that I had them, but hubby and I don't remember.

Which cafe did you work at in Denver? Should I eat there?

Also, that review of the new restaurant sounds GREAT. Should I go get Osteria Marco'd? Phil works at Comedy Works in Larimer Square ALL the time. Perhaps I will get a babysitter... Egad, I've been staying home too much.

And finally, why did you have to move? *whine*

Can't talk pregnancy cravings as we adopted. But oddly enough I don't do much that's canned but baby-not-of-our-womb is all about the can. The can is God. Just ask him! I think it's my husband's influence.

So what secret canned foods does the man-of-house eat?

Healthy Request Italian Wedding Soup
Pasta Sauce
Rotel
Refried Beans

He'd eat the tuna but like someone else here - I think it smells like cat food which just grosses me out. Ick.
