Recovery, Paging Doctor Biden

In 1973, when he was 30 and I was -2, Joe Biden first took office as Senator for the state of Delaware. For my entire life, Joe Biden has been the senator for my home state. That is quite a statement.

He was raised in the same city I was, which is about the size of your pinky. He graduated from the Catholic school right behind the McDonald's we went to. Our "city", and believe me when I tell you that I use that term loosely, is economically and racially diverse in a way that I have rarely seen in any other city I've been to that wasn't a major metropolis. I grew up so far below the poverty level we couldn't see it, and right across the street from me were ESTATES. It's an interesting place to be from, if for no other reason than that you cannot be a racist, or a classist, or an elitist in any way unless you never ever leave your house. You are forced to deal with people from every walk of life, forced to interact with them on the most basic, human levels, and you can't go grocery shopping with someone every single week and not eventually grow to understand them a little.

Needless to say, I have a thing for Joe Biden. Even if I didn't absolutely respect him for his politics, we're from the same tiny little town. We stick together, yo.

A lot of people are disappointed in Obama's choice to nominate Joe as his VP. They say he's old, tainted, too liberal, too prone to sticking his foot in his mouth, too jaded, too something. Since it's Democrat Week in the USA, and since I am going to fly into Ground Zero in two days, I want to just take a break from the poop talk for a second to tell you why I love Joe Biden, why he speaks to me, why HE is the reason I will vote Democrat in this coming up election.

The Violence Against Women Act. He WROTE it. He is a voice, a loud voice, a champion in the war against domestic violence, against gender based crimes. Domestic violence is a major problem in our country, I believe, due not only to a general unwillingness to prosecute it, but also because it is so hard for women to overcome. It messes with your head. It's that sort of violence that goes beyond a bruise and into the psyche of women, and does irreparable damage. I believe in fighting it, for fighting for women and mothers and families, for providing real, honest help to those families struggling with it. So does Joe. And not just in that "I'm going to say I do" way.

Abortion.  Hi, big sensitive topic that I don't like talking about on my blog.  I'll say this; I agree, 100%, with Joe Biden's track record of voting on abortion related issues.  He's a Catholic, I'm an atheist.  His beliefs, which he makes no secret about, so far have in no way influenced his votes.  He is a man of faith, and I respect that, but I am really afraid of someone rubbing their religion all over my constitution, whatever that religion may be.  When I see a Catholic man, a powerful politician, vote for stem cell research, against notifying parents about abortions, for spending A LOT of money on not abstinence education but responsible sex education, against anything really that is going to touch Roe V Wade, well, I respect and appreciate that.  Also, he, just like me, is all about banning partial birth abortions.  Which sounds contradictory, but I swear it's not.  Another day, another time.

He is against banning same sex marriages.  He'll let you burn a flag if that's what you've got to do.  His wife was a teacher for 30 years.  He gets it that public education matters.  He's written legislation to make sending your kids to college a little easier.

Joe Biden brings tempered experience to an Obama White House.  He has been doing this longer than Barack has been driving a car.  He speaks his mind, he's not one to sugar coat, he has a god damn sense of humour already, and he means what he says.  Yeah, maybe he voted for the war, but SO DID YOU.  (not all of you, but most of you, admit it)  Maybe he's way more into drug enforcement than I think he should be, but whatever.  I don't do drugs, never have, never will.  I kind of don't care.  Prosecute it if you must.  Maybe I just won't ever see eye to eye with him on everything, but I don't see eye to eye with my husband on everything either, and I let him see me naked.

There is a lot of chatter about how Obama messed up by tapping Biden for the VP spot, how it deters from his message of Change, and that we Dems will be disenchanted by that.  Realistically, I think (or maybe I just hope) that the vast majority of us, even those who are totally gun-ho for fresh blood and a new outlook in the White House, will appreciate that though there are quite a few slates that need to be wiped clean in our government, there are some that just need to be looked at with mature eyes, with understanding and reasonable and experienced eyes, and maybe just smoothed a little bit.  And that maybe excited, young, fresh eyes sometimes overlook things that someone a bit older, a bit wiser, someone who's looked for those things before will catch.

Right now, my country is heading towards the ICU.  My hope is that JObama will keep a good many things in our nation's post-operative care from slipping through the cracks.  Because, man oh lordy, if we don't get it right this time, I don't know if our little country is going to make it out whole.  And my country is a great place, with a long life ahead of it.

Copied and pasted from the comments, Miko564 adds this, which I wanted to, but couldn't find the words.  Thanks, yo.
I wasn't a fan of Biden's either, until I heard the story about his family.  He was elected to office, then his wife AND daughter were killed in a car accident.  (That would be where I would have curled up in the fetal position and stayed there for a year.)  He wants to abdicate the office to stay at home with his surviving sons.  His supporters talked him into staying in the Senate, but he wants to care for his sons.... So, he decides to stay in DE and COMMUTES TO DC BY TRAIN EVERYDAY FOR 30+ YEARS!!! He raises his kids AND serves his country in the Senate.

I am an independent, and have voted Rep as many times as Dem, but if that ain't family values I don't know what is.  Let Rush, and his like, talk about values, while becoming drug addicts, or trying to cheat on their wives in Airport bathrooms (cause they can't admit they're gay) and let REAL men do whatever needs to be done to take care of their own.

I've been trying to ignore the Presidential race, but suddenly I'm getting a very bad feeling that McCain will win. I'm not sure exactly why it's giving me a bad feeling.

My son, who is far more perceptive than me, saw a McCain ad on TV and said, "He looks like a crazy old man."

I think that must be it.

Look, I know Caroline Kennedy couldn't pull a Cheney and nominate herself. And if it couldn't be her -- I've always had the ultimate girlcrush on Caroline Kennedy and last night didn't help matters much -- then I'm down with Biden. He strikes me as a good man, and I agree with his positions too.

I've always loved Biden. His mouth - and the lack of a filter between said mouth and brain - usually gets him into trouble but his plainspokenness (is that a word) is what I like about him. He seems - dare I say it - decent. It was a great choice. Now, let's hope they actually get elected.

I'm a Libertarian and hubby is a conservative Independent.
That being said, watching with interest as pundits were slamming Biden's outspokenness, hubby said, "I think it's refreshing and not a 'flaw' that a politician speaks his mind, even you don't agree with it. Why is everyone dissing the guy actually saying what he means?"
Point taken.
In a world of carefully crafted speeches and spin, Biden does stick out like a sore thumb.
I think eventually, as a VP, that will be to his advantage, not his undoing.
I think Obama made a very smart choice.

I think it's mighty presumptuous of the media to assume that democrats are so fickle and that a choice such as this will make or break the election. It doesn't matter WHO Obama chose, he is either going to win the election or he isn't. I'm sure some democrats will be disenchanted by his choice, but there are others that would be disenchanted by any other choice, so there really isn't any *perfect* pick. I think most voters recognize this and those who don't were just looking for an excuse not to vote for him anyway (Hi, Hillary supporters that are still holding a grudge). The thing is that the same thing is going to happen to McCain, some will be disenchanted by who he picks so my guess is that it will all even out in the end.

From what I've seen and heard of Biden so far, he seems like a stand up guy for the job. Obama needs someone that's different from him. He'll appeal to a wider range of voters. We don't want somebody who is EXACTLY like the president and conversely, we don't want someone who is the root of all evil like the current VP. Oops, did I say that? I just need to stay out of political discussions.

Great post! I worry that the pick of Biden is counter to the whole "change" platform, since he's been in Washington for so long. Still, I think the upsides that you mention are good too. The Democrats need to get the momentum going again though, otherwise McCain's VP selection and campaign is going to gain ground. I can't take another 4 years like we've been through the past 8 years.

Hi, I was directed here by a friend. Thank you so much for posting such an articulate writeup. I admit I was iffy about Biden, so this was REALLY refreshing and informative to read!

I was moved to comment because I feel the need to address the issue you raised of third trimester/late term abortions. The term you used-- "partial birth abortion"-- is a misnomer, a horrible phrase created by the right wing attack machine to make it sound like murder. People in the pro-choice community do not use this term (just as we use "anti-choice" instead of "pro-life").

Late term abortions only happen in extreme circumstances; situations relating to the life of the mother, the life of the fetus, or extreme situations where an abortion is pushed back (ironically, the right pushes women into these awful situations through insulting "waiting period" laws and limited access to clinics). In fact, most doctors will not perform them.

They should not be outlawed because in the vast majority of circumstances where they happen, they are performed out of medical necessity. Such a decision is incredibly personal and not easy for anyone. It is a private, painful matter that should be left to doctors and families.

The idea that women are lazily changing their minds at the last second and performing some gruesome act is an image perpetrated by the right and not at all indicative of the reality.

I found this essay incredibly heartbreaking and a much more accurate picture of late term abortion:

I actually agree with you on a personal level. I am not bothered by his choice in Biden...on the contrary, I believe it may in fact be a good one. My concern is how the Rep. marketing machine will take the man's weaknesses and use it against the Obama camp. Unfortunately we as a country have lost the ability to make rational and educated decisions in our elections. Too many of us take what we see on television as truth, and don't have full understanding of the dark, hidden side of marketing and advertising.

Obama has a LOT to overcome, based simply on his race. I grew up in the Midwest. My family is from the Midwest. I can tell you as a FACT...racism is alive and well all along the bible belt. Living in a large metropolitan area, its easy to assume that everyone in the entire country can chalk the race issue up as insignificant as easily as I can, because that is, for the most part, what I see around me. But there are times when I travel back home when I am truly shocked by how behind certain areas are in their thinking, and it will cost Obama just as it cost John Kerry. Any middle-aged white man waving a bible and rallying around war stands a good chance of getting elected with a few speeches and a multi million dollar advertising budget.

My point is that in order to win in this "mis-information" age, Obama needs to minimize every possible objection to his candidacy he can think of, and I am not sure that Biden is the right choice. Keep in mind that I have nothing against him personally. If it was simply a "may the best man win" contest, I think they'd do just fine. But its not, and unfortunately Obama must play that game now if he is to do us any good later.

Disclaimer: Yes, I know that not everyone in the Midwest thinks this way. My point is merely that it is more prevalent in those areas than others. Anyone who disagrees clearly has a much different body of experience than I do.

I enjoyed this one. Well explained without venom. Which makes people care to listen. And we NEED to listen this election. Our country is in big trouble. Which is not to say who we should listen to or who we should vote for but my point is simply, if everyone could speak intelligently and informed things like this more people would listen (or we could only hope they would) and be voting on things that matter. Rather than, "I don't like his name". Sadly enough I have heard this as an argument against "Barry". But what do I expect from a country who made Anna Nicole's death front page news? You know what I wonder? How many military men or women died on that very same day. But we won't be hearing about that will we?

Thanks for the heads up.

I'm all for Obama for many reasons. When the pundits all starting speculating about the VP choice, I was all like, Joe WHO?

Thank you for educating us. Honestly, I have read both criticism and praise for him in the Main Stream Media. It is such a great relief to hear from someone who KNOWS. This post is exactly why blogging will have such an impact on this year's election. It's the power of the people.

wow - thank you SOOOO much for bringing me up to speed on Sen Biden. And saving me a lot of google searches. ALWAYS helps to understand how they treated their constituents locally and I appreciate the info.

Right now, my country is heading towards the ICU.

I disagree with this for a number of reasons. We have been through far worse, such as the Civil War and the Depression. We will weather this storm.

I am not a big fan of any of the candidates. I won't bore you with a long post about why. But what I will say is that I am tired of the belly aching I hear from people about how the Republican attack machine is going to destroy the Democrats.

That sort of crying bothers me because it infantilizes the Dems not to mention that the Dems will spend time flinging mud at the Republicans too.

I don't want a president who can't handle adversity, who can't address attacks by providing substantive responses. If you can't deal with the election you can't deal with the intricacies of governing.

And on a slightly separate tack, I am tired of listening to people who won't vote gripe about things. If you can't vote, you can't complain.

How many times do we have to listen to ignorant people spout off about things they don't understand. If you are unfamiliar with the party platforms you can't really say if you are for or against a candidate.

I am very interested to see what happens with the next few nominees to the court. It is a lifetime appointment so anyone who makes it to the bench can have a tremendous amount of influence on our country.

And if I can rattle on for one more moment, part of the fun of the nominees is that you just don't know what will happen. When Ike appointed Earl Warren you can bet that he didn't expect him to turn out the way that he did.

Thanks for this post about Joe Biden. I am Canadian, and I can't vote. (Obviously.) But what happens Down There influences what happens Up Here, and I didn't really know anything about him. I now know enough to at least start to think intelligently about the race, and I appreciate that. And I also appreciate that you presented him even-handedly, acknowledging that his view and yours might not always parallel. Thanks!
