A Warm Gun

Mr Lady
Today is my stupid blog's fourth birthday. When I took her in for her Year Four Well-Blog Check-up, they told me she should be doing many of the following:
Um, yeah. Whatever. I've failed worse tests.
Liz found a meme I've never done before and tagged me for it. Like aliens and the Templar Knights and chocolate cheesecake that actually tastes good, I wasn't sure that existed. I'm supposed to tell you what makes me happy, and I'm only telling you four things, one for each year of this blog's life. But I will tell you four things I have gone to great lengths to conceal from you on this blog. Because I had a little bit to drink tonight, that's why.
I do this on the condition that you will leave me a comment telling me who the hell you are and ONE thing that makes you happy. Because all my blog wants for its birthday is to know who's reading her. All of you, if you please. It would make us very, very happy indeed.
Using sentences with 5 or more words not including bygones, yo, gigglegiggle, tee hee or dawg.
Using pronouns (my blog is abstaining until marriage; it better not be using those things)
Beginning to understand cause and effect, such as, “If you write about your insanity, people will start hate blogs dedicated to you”.
Most words and sentences in posts are understood by others. (Now that's just funny.)
Socializes with other blogs well. (But not as funny as this one.)
Develops friendships independent of you, such as following new people on Twitter.
Expresses a wide range of emotions. Takes medications for each.
May stay dry most nights. MAY.
Um, yeah. Whatever. I've failed worse tests.

- My life with the Thrill Kill Cult.
- This picture make me happy.
- My Alice in Wonderland collection makes me very happy.
- This makes me the happiest of all.

I am totally happy that I was raised as a Jehovah's Witness. There is a great deal of contention as to whether or not it actually qualifies as a cult, but until you are born into a group that isolates you completely from the world around you, brainwashes you with a bunch of jargon and some pretty heavy apocalyptic doomsday scenarios and then convinces you to give yourself up wholly, physically and mentally, your entire life, ambitions, dreams and visions of oral sex to said group, well, you don't really get to say what is or isn't a cult. That's just the rules.
So there you have it, the biggie, the ONE thing I never wanted any of you to know. The thing I certainly don't want Google to notice, so let's not mention it again, okay? I have enough trouble reconciling it within myself without every newly freed witness kid banging my blog doors down. (If you must mock me for it, refer to it as "Jay Dub", okay? Our Google overlords are watching.)
But still, I can say without reservation that I am totally at peace with it, and oddly grateful for it. A lot of my friends are still really angry, or still really revolting from it, but in the end, the shit I was dealing with was so much worse than No Christmas and No Outside Friendships that my little sect of Christianity was actually able to do me some good, offer me some structure and sanity and a belief that it would get better. I can't say I would have made it without them. And they taught me to study, to seek knowledge, to learn. Learning so makes me happy.

I love my mother. I will never repeat that in a public setting, ever, so don't try me, but I love her. I miss her so bad it hurts sometimes. The woman she is today is not that woman in the picture, and that's why I love it so. Because she was there, and I can still hold her in my hand whenever I choose.

It usually lives in a box in the basement and on the bad spot on the bookshelves where you can't see the books anymore, but I love it. Because it makes no sense. Because it's unlike me in every way, and still it is totally me. And because Alice was one Fucked. Up. Chick.

That is Our Lady of Perpetual Hors d'œuvres. You try growing up in a cult and see if you walk away without a penchant for irreverant Christian artifacts.

Hi, Mr. Lady. I'm Jen, and while living in Utah I learned to use the threat of Mormonism as a defense against the JW knocking on my door. (They don't knock here anymore. We've been marked!)
My children make me happy. Sure, sometimes it's just the IDEA of my children that makes me happy, but most of the time it's the REALITY of them that does the trick. They're really good kids, though I think I may set my standards a bit high for them. Not like "no farting" too high. (Hey, we all need to let of a little steam now and again.) But as far as treating people respectfully, controlling themselves, speaking rather than throwing fits. You know...the "grow up" kind of standard (though I've yet to simply say "grow up" 'cause that's NOT what I'm going for here; oh, sure, I want them to grow up EVENTUALLY, but I'd like them to take their own sweet time). I love watching them, hearing them, listening to their funny ideas, playing with them, learning with them (we're oddball homeschoolers who love an educational challenge - what can I say?), living with them, snuggling with them, exploring with them.
Reading your blog also makes me happy, sometimes shocked, sometimes sad, but most of the time it gives me a laugh; sometimes as a result of content, sometimes style. And laughing aloud is something I REALLY need to do more often! THANKS!

I'm Fien from Belgium. I am a complete blog whore, always changing the blogs in my reader, but yours always stays on there.
One thing that makes me happy is walking in the rain.
Please keep blogging.
Howdy, I'm Del and I'm and Aussie (perhaps I should have said g'day).
OK, I love my kids and going on adventures with them, anywhere anytime and ending up in totally random and amazing places. It doesn't happen often but it is great.
Happy bloggy birthday.

My tattoos make me happy. Also the fact that, to look at me all clothed and groomed, you would never know I had them. They are just for me, to reveal as I choose, or not.

P.S. I probably should have said something all mushy like my kids or my husband -sshhh, don't tell them.

Happy 4th birthday - I'm Donna, and I moved to Beijing, China, right around the time you celebrated your 2nd birthday. I'll be here until you turn 5. Or 6. After that, who knows? One thing that makes me happy? When I can open my mouth and form an intelligible sentence entirely in Chinese (doesn't happen often).

Hee! What an awesome artifact. I love it.
That picture is gorgeous. Sometimes I wonder if digital cameras have kind of destroyed that eerie ability for one still photograph to capture so much.
Hi. Michele from Boston here. In no particular order: Watching my son "playing" the guitar, holding him when he is in a snuggly mood and smelling his hair, walking the dogs on a quiet morning and not running into any other dogs, GIANT fluffy snowflakes that cover everything in a perfect blanket of white, seeing the seeds I plant in the spring sprout into plants and then food later in the season, the ocean, stars, friends in Friendship Maine, kayaking on the cove, holding hands with my husband before falling asleep at night, talking to my mom. There are more, but that is a good start.

Happy 4th Birthday!! I'm Angela from (a burb of) Cleveland, OH. My job makes me happy, and oddly, watching a needle go into someone else's arm to draw blood or start an IV makes me happy, if it is a successful poke (I'm an RN). My kids and husband make me happy too, in a different kind of way. So does really good chocolate. Oh, and wine. Wine makes me happy.
Midnight adventures with my daughter make me really happy, but they don't happen as much anymore. We used to go to whatever place was air-conditioned (it would be so hot and muggy and we were without AC) and open at midnight, in our pajamas with curlers in our hair, and sing James Brown's "I feel good", kind of loudly. The looks that would bring us made us ridiculously happy. Sadly, my daughter does not want to do that as much anymore. She was 7 when we got AC, and now that she is 12, she'll go, in her pajamas, with an eye roll, but she will NOT let me put curlers in her hair. I wonder if my son will let me do that? He's only 2.
Sigh/ They grow up so fast.
Claire from Michigan. What makes me happy? Expressing myself, sometimes through photography, writing, primal screams :) Also my son's laugh.
Happy blogiversary!
Hello, I am MommyTime, and I am an al... Oh, wait, sorry, wrong meeting.

No, that just sounds stupid.
I am MommyTime, and this makes me happy: cutting a large slice of leftover (but not stale) homemade chocolate birthday cake with really good chocolate icing, and sitting down with a fresh cup of hot coffee, and eating the whole slice FOR BREAKFAST without interruption because my husband took the kids to school already.
And because that makes me happy, now I'm going to go do it. Thanks for the inspiration!
(Also, it practically goes without saying that you have the best hors doeuvre platter I've ever seen.)

Some one thing that makes me happiest is of course my daughter (only because she's still passed old cold this morning). Once she wakes up to terrorize the vicinity with sticky fingers and whiney protests, I'll quickly remember why our plans to have ten chidlren have been put on hold for the time being! Because contrary to my Mother's belief (that we should be popping out another grandchild for her to spoil) I simply cannot fathom the idea of two full sets of Pretty Ponies, two sets of outgrown clothes, two sets of "I want drink," "I want cheese," "I'm the baby!" and certainly not two sets of tiny bodies thinking it's okay to sleep on Mommies head all night to see if we can smother her before morning! Yes, I'm happiest now because we only have ONE terrorist in the house and SHE is fast asleep!

well well well. i loved this blog entry almost more than any other you did. while i didn't laugh aloud at this one, which i do at so many you write, i DID smile and take it to heart. i love that photo of your mother. i love the fact that despite all of the alluding you do to your very, very hard upbringing, you still have the maturity and heart to look back and see her as a person that she once was. i love your obession with alice in wonderland. and wasn't she fucked up??? dude, i've been tryin' to tell people that FOR. EVAH. and the queen of hearts? shit yo that chick scares the bejesus outta me. ahem. anyway. so you wanted EVERYONE to put a comment in. so i am. i have to tell ya i read your blog daily, and continually you make me crack up. and tear up. you are THAT GOOD woman. i have to say that honestly i love you for all of your sharing and your insights and your jokes. and crack ups. and posts that make me cry. i usually don't comment bc i honestly don't think anything i have to offer is going to be of any interest to you- not bc i think you're stuck up but mostly bc i think you're THAT CLEVER and iw ouldn't really have anything of interest to you to add. putting that aside- i love your writing. i think your family is gorgeous. i think YOU'RE gorgeous- inside and out. how corny am i??? anyway. one thing that makes me happy? you. thank you for sharing so much and thank you for letting us peer into your life and thank you for your musings and your sense of humor and your honesty. i was raised Buddhist, shocker i know bc i'm the whitest girl around, and i can tell you that no one ever expects that from me- especially bc i have a firm faith at this point in my life. people will never fail to surprise you- one thing you can count on in life. and one thing i love about life.
and i'm endin' this right now cuz damn yo, this comment is WAY to effin' long. i love readin' ya tho, girl. don't stop.
Hi there. I have been reading your blog for awhile now. I kinda thought, by some of the things that you have said before, that you were a recovering Jehovah's Witness.
I, too, was raised a witness. From the time I was seven. I had already gotten to celebrate seven of everything and then it was gone. Yeah, try explaining that to a seven year old and have it make sense.
In September, it will be 15 years since I walked away from that life. That cult. It is so nice to see that there is someone else out there that has been through being a witness and has come to the same conclusion that I did. They are a cult. There really is no other way to describe it.
Happy Fourth Birthday!!!
Happy 4th birthday!
Things that make me happy? When my 14 y/o hangs with the family without the attitude, when the 12 y/o smiles his infectious smile, when the 10 y/o indulges his creativity, when the 8 y/o gives me kisses with no embarrassment.
Happy 4th Birthday! I'm a stay-at-home mom to two sweet (most of the time) girls. Being able to stay in my pajamas all day if I so choose makes me really happy. I hate dieting, so I'm grumpy a lot of the time right now...trying to lose the baby weight from Goose. A big piece of spice cake slathered with buttercream frosting would really make me happy right now. You should have one for your birthday. I'll be happy for you.

So I'll pick a good happy - Watching movies that are mushy happy ending, romantic and funny, old, new, musical or not, I'm all over them and shut up, don't talk to me, don't distrub me and pass me the Cheesy Popcorn and my G & T.

OK, so Sam's Club Triple Chocolate Cake makes me very, very happy. I must have eaten one a week during my second pregnancy. And now I have a very, very happy (and very chubby) toddler. Coincidence? I think not.
However, I no longer live in the US, and I no longer have access to Sam's Club Triple Chocolate Cake, so I gotta come up with something to replace it until I move back... in 2.5 years. So we'll just go with the fact that my almost-18-month-old actually attempted to say, and not just sign, "please" today. That made me super happy.
So childhood milestones, big and small. Those are my happies.
