Housekeeping I'll Actually Do

Because after two weeks, I feel pretty confident that these are just never getting folded and put away.
Yep, all clean.
And my husband would like to note that this has been three weeks in the making.
Starbucks doesn't offer THAT.
In all fairness, he put it there, and there is behind "his" toilet, so I'm not taking the fall for it.  Period.

Anyway, two things:

1) The Partial Feeds.  Here's the thing...people's blogs get scraped all the time, I get that, and for the most part I can roll with it.  Mine isn't so fucking earth-shattering that I can't stomach some stupid pregnancy website that no one reads anyway lifting my content every single goddamn day, but when websites that make mention of boys in ways that Michael Jackson would even be all, "Whoa, dude", the claws come out.  And then, when I get so hyper-sensitive that I send an email to the people at FavorIt or whatever that site is called tearing them an new internet asshole for doing nothing more than Google Reader does, I figure it's time for me to stop the madness.  Hence the partial feeds. I am really sorry; I know they suck.

2) Comments.  The always lovely Judith Shakespeare is currently working on a shiny new template for me and while I wait, I've been thinking about other things that need to give.  I'm a fan of emailing replies to comments so that no one knows when I totally suck ass and don't reply I can leave personal, and possibly risque, responses.  However, after a long talk with my pretend internet boyfriend who espoused the merits of replying in the comments and talked about community building and conversations which is really funny coming from a guy who eats ice cream with Hitler, I thought that maybe I was wrong.

So, you pick.  Do I keep emailing replies or do they go in comment threads?  Reader's choice, yo.

Reader Comments (90)

Comments!

(And I had a pan that was out of circulation all winter because it was sitting outside the back door with decomposed spaghetti in it.)

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMwa

Right. Can totally cope with partial feeds now I know why. Comments? Whatever makes your life easier. You know I email, but I'm thinking if maybe I should be seen in my own comments more often you know? If you come up with a great plan, let me know and I'll shamelessly steal it.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterVeronica

I keep waiting around for all the laundry & housework shit to do itself and it doesn't work for me either. Damn it. I didn't know you were having issues with your site...I must've missed something? But as far as the replies go, I like the personal replies, myself. They make me feel special. :)

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterChristy

It's like your laundry is playing peek-a-boo! And damn, I thought it was just me you emailed. :^)

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteranne nahm

Hey Mr. Lady! Do whatever is comfortable for you.......Peace, Mike.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMike Marshall

I make the boy toy do the laundry and all I have to do is put away - however, it will sit for a week or two before I even think about putting it away. I H.A.T.E laundry. It's a vicious cycle...

And my hot tea cup had mold in it from me being out of the office all last week and of course to lazy to rinse it out when I left early on Friday. I about threw up when I got to my office on Monday...

I am lazy..OMG...I am my mother... ;) and that is a whole other story in itself...

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDarla

I have to say, yes, I hate the partial feeds. But, that's okay. I get it.

As for the laundry, girl I feel ya. I hate putting that crap away. I wish the laundry did itself. (That sounded dirty, huh?)

I personally like getting your reply emails. But if you decide to change it that is okay with me, too. It just means coming back and checking your blog over and over again. :)

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJ

I've lost my sofa to laundry and can't seem to care.

The partial feeds I don't mind since I usually click through to leave comments anyway.

I wish I had time to answer all my commenters like I used to (at my site), but it's a time drag. If there was more 'back and forth' commenting I'd do that again. I do love getting personal replies though.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTara R.

Dude.... I can barely get dinner on the table for three kids let alone go back to a blog and check what was said about the comment I left.

Which means all of you down below me can say anything you want about me and I would have NO CLUE. Heh.

But then again, in all honesty, I try and respond to my readers through emails at the end of each night. And as much as I love doing it. Sometimes it feels like a chore. So.... do what you feel is best for you.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterOHmommy

Is there anyone out there who enjoys laundry or any other form of housework? (If you find them, will you send them my way!?) hehe

As for comments..I say email, but really-whatever works for you is my thought! :)

~K

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKel

Emails, me. Cuz otherwise I don't know if I should go back and read comments and which ones and all that. More work for me.

And I'm lazy.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTeacherMommy

Email!!!!!!

It's so personal, even though it's really not. It's like the blogging equivalent of a hand written snail mailed thank you with a stamp.

Or maybe I'm neurotic.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJessi

I love the personal aspect of rock-star emails but I understand the community-building thing. (I suck at both.)

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdaysgoby

I never go back and read comment threads on blogs...I usually reply directly to the commenter.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLifeAsIKnowIt

I'm torn on the comments one. See, I'm lazy and if I'd have to go to your website and keep an eye on it to see if you replied I might miss stuff because I go online drunk/sleepy and forget things. Also I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have gone all creepy fake-stalker on you and you on me and done lunch had it been in comments.

I think that what I'm trying to say is that reply in comments if it continues something that other people should bother reading. Yes, it promotes conversation but that's something that's not missing from your site, just not visible.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterrozie

I don't know... if you can't comment on other blogs (*cough*) how will you find time to comment here?

Like others have mentioned, I don't often check back for replies, so unless you use a feedback system like Britt or Avitable (where the commenter gets an email with the comment reply in it), I'd prefer the email approach.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSciFi Dad

That is one mean batch of 'cillin you're brewing up.

As for the partial feeds? I really don't care either way. If someone's too lazy to click through to read your stuff, they don't like you enough to warrant you worrying about them anyway.

As for comment responses? I used to reply within the comments section and I loved it. It built a nice backstory and conversation to each post. However, as you know, I wouldn't write a new post until I responded to all the comments from the last post, and as I got busier and busier it would up to 2 weeks to get to that, so my post frequency dropped. So now I just comment back via email, and I only do that sporadically. It allows me the freedom to post as frequently as I want... which turns out is every two weeks.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBusyDad

Comments go in the comment thread bitch!
So funny about your feed, I was clicking to follow the jump over here from my reader and I thought "hm, I don't think I used to have to do this, I will have to ask why I do all of a sudden". But, as usual, if you will just be patient the writer will always explain.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered Commenternatasha

I e-mail replies.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmazing Greis

You mean you reply to EVERYBODY's comments and not just mine? Waaaaaaahhh! Here I was thinking I was somebody special!!

(just kidding)

Actually, I'm surprised that you do, given the volume of comments you get. And tailoring a personal response to each individual would quite an undertaking. Is this something new, or is it becoming more and more an accepted part of blogging? Because maybe I'll start doing the same thing, if it'll keep people visiting.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdiamond dave

I feel a bit of a fool here, but what's a "partial feed"?

I'm a relatively new reader to blogs, and I'm old on top of that (46), so scuse my ignorance in this question.

Oh, looky, I posted/commented a question for ya Mr. L---if you send me an email, I might not feel such a fool, but then if you posted an answer to my question, and there's other's here who are also "ignorant" in this way, you'll educate the lot of us!

I like personal emails, as you know, it's less embarrassing (for the commenter), and I appreciate that ;)

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

I don't ever go back into a blog to see if the writer has responded to my comments, so I would say ixnay to that one.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKori

OK, I'll go against the grain.... I like seeing the comment replies IN the comments thread.... it can make a good follow-up/back-story.... and you don't have to go through the chore of responding to each and every commenter directly - just to the basic direction of the comments as a whole.

IMO, If someone wants to see your response to their comment badly enough, they'll come back later.... what's the worst that can happen? A few extra, repeat visits to the blog ;)

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterShannon

You know how I vote. People will still get the replies in their email AND they will show up in the comment thread simultaneously.

And we have to keep our illicit love affair on the DL, baby! Tanis will hurt me!

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAvitable

If you're as crass and hilarious in every response as you are in the ones to me, then bring it on in the comments. Multiple funny is a good thing.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMs. Maxwell

I may be the only one, but I prefer to visit your (and everone else's) site to read your posts... I know you spend money and time, and I feel more... connected... to you when I'm at your place, reading your words. (In a non-creepy way, honest)

In line with that, I MUCH prefer your personal emails. Makes me feel spechul. Maybe you could comment on some of your comment-ers in your comments, thusly (heh) inspiring said sense of community and encouraging more discussion... did that even make sense? Sorry, I'm pecking away on my phone...

Comes down to the fact that I don't give a rats' ass WHAT you do, I will always read and comment when I can.

XO

B.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjust beth

I never read the email reply's and I'd love to see how you reply to other peoples comments. Have Judith put a "reply link" in your comments (see my blog for an example). I also use backtype to track comments and replies I leave on others blogs.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterhubs

Personally, I like that you email replies. Makes me feel special. :D

As for partial feeds, I was wondering until the other day when I discovered that my business site is being scraped and the scraped site is being ranked higher than mine for some searches. Not cool. So I totally understand why you would do that and since I leave a comment half the time, I´m usually coming to your site anyway!

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterExpat Mom

What, you mean you reply by email to everyone? Not just ME?!? Those emails are like found dollars in the bottom of the couch. Don't stop!

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterApril

Partial Feeds - I agree, they suck. Usually I won't subscribe for long if they're only partials... but the whole creepy Michael Jackson thing? Yeah, that's a good reason. Now I won't bitch and moan about the extra 1/4 second it takes me to click through.

Comments - Responding in comments is good, because it does encourage "discussion" and all that good shit. But, if I comment somewhere, the chances of me remembering to come back and check if my comment got a response are slim to none :) Blame it on the blonde. I can't click the "email me follow up comments" cause then I'd never get through my inbox. Emails mean I'll know there's a response, but it cuts off further discussion. WP has plugins for dumbasses like me - I'm sure there's plenty of them out there, that send the original commenter an email copy of your response. This one's pretty easy -
http://www.u-g-h.com/wordpress-plugins/wordpress-plugin-comment-email-responder/

Problem solved :)

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKay

Risque emails? Shit... maybe I'll start commenting...

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdaniel

I'd like if you would respond in the comments, but it's your call, eh? By the way, how on earth did you get a picture of my bedroom? I TOLD my husband I would fold them tonight already, so get off my back! :)

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMamapajama

your emails make me smile.
keep em. up.
p.s. i'm impressed with your laundry loads.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteranne

I can't believe you are struggling with that same epic question that I have asked other bloggers and have gotten all laughed at for....but then again I don't have anywhere near the status that you do. :-)

I never ever ever ever ever go back and look at the comment section to see the community that is happening in the comment section. I'm not sure who does - anyone?? Would love to know.

I love the personal emails but never care when I don't get one. I try to email my commenters but often fall waaaayyyy behind....

Such is my life.

And please don't respond to this lame comment either in the comment or via email.

:-)

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLee of MWOB

I am with Julie...what is the partial feed.... as for comments to each their own...I mostly comment back the comments...but also like the emails from comments...hummm to each their own.

I much prefer the personal e-mail replies. Because I'm a lazy sloth and once I comment? I never go back and keep reading the thread.

I love the baskets full of CLEAN laundry... how do they know which one is CLEAN and which one is DIRTY... and better yet... WHEN does it switch over???

I love the moldy coffee cup... and think it's totally gross... but how many times have I done that at work after a holiday weekend... or a vacation... and come back to UCK !

But I don't understand your #1 at all... it was too cryptic.... sometimes I send my (disabled) daughter pieces of blogs that I think are just toooooo close to home - but I send her the web address so she can follow religiously like I do... (I still don't understand #1)

#2
From my mentally challenged computer skills - I'm thinking that you want to know if it's alright for you to answer each of us ON your blog comments OR do we want personal messages to our eMail addresses...

My thoughts are - it's so much funnier to read YOUR replys to our comments... and I rarely open THAT eMail that I use for bloggin...

Did I get it right????? Do I win a prize????? or am I just a boobie? ! ! !

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPooba~

1. Haven't been able to sit on my couch since last Wednesday. But dammittohell, the clothes are all clean on it!

2.) I totally get the partial feeds and come here to comment anyway.

3.) The emails make me feel special, and I don't generally go back to see if my comment was followed up. Avitable's system sounded pretty cool though. (That was a scary admission...)

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmo

As far as comments go, do what's easiest for you -- just please, please, please don't stop blogging! :-)

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDarcie

Your comments back to me on email are the only thing I have to live for.

No heavy trip mind you.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAudubon Ron

My strong preference is that you come to my house to fold my laundry. Because I'm thinking that what you really need is a change in scenery and what I really need are folded clothes.

Or email responses.
Unless it's something like "Dear Marinka, your comment was the best." I'd like that posted in comments. Or in your header.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMarinka

I don't usually check back in a blog's comments once I leave mine, so I always appreciate the few bloggers who email me a response, but I also understand that depending on the number of comments you might receive that it may not be reasonable. Either way, I enjoy your blog!

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKaty

What on earth? Are you saying that someone is taking your stuff and posting it on some nasty pedophile site? Holy crap. Are they crediting you with it, and that's how you found out? Because someone came to you and asked what the hell you were doing posting on a nasty site? Or did some Dateline show track your stuff down and try and pin it on you? Wow, whatever the case, if it would make Jacko cringe, that's something. Not cool.

Whatever floats your boat on the comment stuff. It's really about you, you know.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKristin

I like the emails. Sometimes that is the only thing that makes me laugh in a day (I'm posting about this tonight or tomorrow. sorry to be cryptic.) But its your blog and I'll still be reading no matter what.
As for the coffee mug, I see you've found your way around national health care. make the antibiotics at home! I would but I'm allergic so it wouldn't be good for me to breathe that stuff in. or spill it on my hand.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer A

I love the emails and rarely check back on a blogs comments; the one time I signed up for comments to be emailed to me (I'd written what was, I thought, a BRILLIANT comment) I had a overflowing inbox, a constantly vibrating iPhone and a case of the crankies cuz in the end? The blog author didn't respond to anyone, despite having asked for feedback. ANyhoo, do whatever works best for you, I don't comment to get a response, but they are treasured when I do receive one. Being a non-blogger, replies are the only way I feel a part of the little cliche of bloggers instead of a peeping tom.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered Commentersherpamom

Well, I sa this. What does it matter what some other person says or does? Personally, thought this blog is great, the personal touch, to me, the e-mails are a great way for you to become closer to your loyal readers/followers/suedo stalkers.

On subject 1...who the fuck is this guy and do I need to sharpen my knives?

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMatt

Okay, what do you mean about the partial feeds getting scraped?

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

I use a comment email replier plug-in. So that even when I reply to someone, it shows on the blog and gets delivered to whatever email they used when they left the comment. Now, if I could just get those puppies to THREAD, too, I'd be in commenting heaven.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterZoeyjane

Comment thread, comment thread.

June 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEllie

I was a little confused when the cut off feeds started showing up, but I just assumed it was due to someone stealing content. So, no problems here!

I don't usually go back to the comments to see what was said after me, so I guess my vote is for the email option. Is there anyway to email a commenter and have it posted in the comments? That way everyone could be happy, right? Anyway, I say do whatever works for you - it is your blog afterall.
